Ingredients
- 320g sheet ready-rolled light puff pastry
- 1 tbsp Marmite
- 2–3 large handfuls of fresh spinach
- 80g cheddar cheese, grated or sliced
- Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) or gas mark 6 to prepare for baking the pinwheels.
- Prepare Pastry: Unroll the sheet of ready-rolled light puff pastry with the longer side facing you, ready to layer the fillings.
- Spread Marmite: Evenly spread 1 tablespoon of Marmite across the surface of the pastry for a rich, umami flavor base.
- Add Spinach and Cheese: Tear 2-3 large handfuls of fresh spinach leaves and scatter them over the Marmite layer, then sprinkle 80g of cheddar cheese evenly on top.
- Roll and Slice: Starting from the longer side closest to you, tightly roll the pastry into a long sausage shape. Once rolled, cut the log into 12 equal pinwheel pieces.
- Arrange for Baking: Place the pinwheels spiral side up on two baking trays lined with baking parchment. Squash each piece down slightly with your hand to flatten a little.
- Freeze Option: At this stage, you can cover and freeze the prepared pinwheels for later baking.
- Bake: For fresh pinwheels, bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until puffed and golden brown. If baking from frozen, increase baking time to about 25 minutes to ensure thorough cooking and crispiness.
Notes
- Using ready-rolled puff pastry saves preparation time and ensures consistent thickness.
- Marmite adds a strong, salty, umami flavor—adjust quantity according to taste.
- Fresh spinach should be well washed and torn to fit evenly across the pastry.
- Pinwheels can be frozen before baking for convenient make-ahead snacks.
- Serve warm as an appetizer, snack, or party food alongside dips or salads.
