Flapjacks Ingredients
- 225g butter, plus extra for the tin
- 75g caster sugar
- 4 tbsp honey
- 350g porridge oats
- Prepare the oven and tin: Preheat your oven to 180C (160C fan) or gas mark 4. Butter a 30 x 15 cm rectangular baking tin and line it with baking parchment to prevent the flapjacks from sticking.
- Melt butter mixture: In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter, caster sugar, and honey together, stirring frequently until the butter has fully melted and the mixture is smooth and combined.
- Mix oats with butter mixture: Place the porridge oats into a large mixing bowl. Pour the warm butter and honey mixture over the oats, stirring well to ensure all the oats are thoroughly coated with the syrupy mixture.
- Prepare for baking: Transfer the oat mixture into the prepared tin. Use a spatula or the back of a spoon to spread and press the mixture evenly across the tin for uniform thickness.
- Bake the flapjacks: Place the tin in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the flapjacks turn a lovely light golden brown color, indicating they are cooked through but still chewy.
- Cool and slice: Remove the tin from the oven and allow the flapjacks to cool completely in the tin. Once cooled, lift them out using the parchment paper and cut into squares to serve.
Notes
- Use rolled porridge oats for the best texture; avoid instant oats as they can become mushy.
- For an extra crunch, consider adding nuts or seeds to the oat mixture before baking.
- Store flapjacks in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them fresh for up to a week.
- Make sure the flapjacks cool fully before cutting to prevent them from crumbling.
- To make the recipe vegan, swap butter for a plant-based margarine and use maple syrup instead of honey.
