4.9 from 73 reviews

This recipe guides you through making classic gourmet caramel apples, perfect for autumn treats or festive occasions. Crisp apples are coated in rich, melted caramel and can be customized with a variety of toppings like chocolate, nuts, or sprinkles, creating a delightful combination of tartness and sweet chewiness.

Ingredients

Scale

Apples

  • 6 Granny Smith apples (or your preferred variety)
  • 6 wooden apple sticks

Caramel

  • 16 oz (about 450 g) caramel candies (such as Brach’s, Kraft, or a block of Peter’s Caramel)

Toppings (optional)

  • Milk, dark, or white chocolate (melted)
  • Chopped nuts
  • Toffee bits
  • Mini M&M’s
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. If possible, use organic apples as non-organic ones are often coated with wax that can prevent caramel from sticking. If using waxed apples, dip them in very hot water for a few seconds and rub off the wax gently to improve adhesion.
  2. Melt the caramel: Melt the caramel candies either in the top of a double boiler over simmering water or in a microwave-safe bowl by heating in short intervals of 20-30 seconds, stirring in between to ensure even melting without burning.
  3. Insert sticks: Push a wooden apple stick firmly into the core of each apple, leaving enough length outside the apple for easy dipping and handling.
  4. Dip apples into caramel: Holding the apple by the stick, dip each apple into the melted caramel, turning to coat evenly. Allow excess caramel to drip off back into the bowl.
  5. Set and chill: Place the caramel-coated apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. After dipping several apples, put them in the refrigerator to help the caramel cool and set quickly before adding any optional toppings.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a perfect balance with sweet caramel.
  • If the caramel thickens while dipping, reheat gently to keep it fluid.
  • Optional toppings can be added immediately after dipping while the caramel is still tacky.
  • Store caramel apples in the refrigerator and consume within 3-4 days for best freshness.
  • Be careful when handling hot melted caramel to avoid burns.
