4.8 from 25 reviews

This Pizza Grilled Cheese combines the comforting gooeyness of melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese with classic pizza flavors like marinara sauce, turkey pepperoni, garlic, and Italian seasoning, all toasted between buttery slices of bread. It’s a quick, delicious twist on traditional grilled cheese, perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp butter (softened)

Fillings

  • ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)

Seasonings and Garnish

  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Sprinkle the buttered side with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to infuse the bread with savory pizza flavors as it toasts.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Place two slices of bread buttered side down on a flat surface. Evenly spread marinara sauce on the inside (unbuttered) side of each slice. Layer the shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and turkey pepperoni slices on top of the sauce. Optionally add any extra toppings you prefer. Top with the remaining two slices of bread, buttered side up.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches onto the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side. Press down slightly with a spatula to help the cheese melt evenly. Carefully flip when the bottom is golden brown. Continue until the bread is crisp and golden and the cheeses are fully melted.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to cool for one minute. Slice each sandwich in half and garnish with chopped fresh basil for a burst of fresh flavor. Serve warm with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Use medium-low heat to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.
  • Substitute turkey pepperoni with vegetarian pepperoni or omit for a vegetarian version.
  • For a crispier crust, you can use sourdough or whole wheat bread.
  • Adding fresh basil after cooking enhances the flavor but avoid cooking basil to preserve its freshness.
  • Serve with additional marinara sauce for a delicious dipping experience.
