4.7 from 123 reviews

Rainbow spaghetti is a fun and colorful twist on traditional pasta that’s perfect for sensory play or a vibrant meal. Cooked spaghetti is divided into portions, tinted with different food colorings, and then rinsed to set the colors. It can be enjoyed on its own for playful sensory exploration or dressed with salad dressing or melted butter, topped with grated cheddar and fresh salad leaves for a tasty, visually appealing dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 200g spaghetti
  • A mix of food colourings (red, yellow, green, blue)
  • Salad dressing or melted butter, to taste
  • 50g cheddar, grated
  • Mixed salad leaves and vegetables, to serve

Instructions

  1. Cook the Spaghetti: Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Once cooked, drain the spaghetti thoroughly.
  2. Divide for Coloring: Separate the drained spaghetti evenly into bowls, based on the number of colors you plan to use, such as five bowls for five colors.
  3. Add Food Coloring: Add a drop of food coloring into each bowl, or mix two colors (e.g., red and yellow to create orange). Stir well to evenly coat the spaghetti. If needed, add a splash of water to help disperse the color.
  4. Let Set and Rinse: Allow the color to set for about 5 minutes, then rinse the spaghetti under cold running water to stop the cooking process and fix the colors.
  5. Serve or Play: For sensory play, place the rainbow spaghetti in a large tray or plastic bowl for children to explore. Optionally add ice cubes or allow toddlers (aged 2–4) to practice cutting with safety scissors.
  6. Toss and Dress: If serving as a meal, toss the colorful spaghetti with salad dressing or melted butter for flavor.
  7. Finish and Garnish: Sprinkle with grated cheddar on top and serve alongside a fresh salad of mixed leaves and vegetables.

Notes

  • This recipe is great as a sensory activity for children or as a visually striking meal.
  • Leftover rainbow spaghetti can be used to make a rainbow spaghetti omelette by mixing with beaten eggs and grated parmesan, then cooking in a pan and finishing under the grill.
  • When using food colorings, adding a splash of water helps in spreading the colors evenly.
  • Use safety scissors for toddlers to practice cutting the spaghetti safely during play.
  • For best results, rinse spaghetti under cold water to fix the colors and prevent color bleeding.
